Strolling Down the Golden Lane in Prague The World Is A Book
The Golden Lane is a narrow, small and charming street located in the Prague Castle complex, named after the goldsmiths which once lived there. During the sixteenth century, the alleyway was called "Goldsmith Lane" because of the goldsmiths that resided in the street's miniature houses. However, with time, it became "Golden Lane".

A special atmosphere reigns in the little street by the Prague Castle, called the Golden Lane. It is lined with small picturesque houses, that look rather like doll´s houses than people´s homes. They are coloured and the origin of some of them goes back to the 16th century. The renowned writer Franz Kafka lived in the Golden Lane for some time during the World War I.

A Brief History of the Golden Lane. Golden Lane was built by soldiers who were working in the defense wall on the northern side of the Prague Castle. They were allowed to build their humble dwellings in the arches of the wall, which was convenient for their occupation. Later the small houses were rented to independent goldsmiths.
